KULAIJAYA, 11 December 2014 – Felda Taib Andak was officially launched as the first Low Carbon Village in Malaysia by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
The event was officiated by UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar.
Speaking at a press conference after the launching ceremony, he said UTM is committed to transforming neighboring communities through knowledge and technology transfer.
“The Low Carbon Village project not only helps in tackling climate change, but also strengthens local economy through increased tourist activities.”
“Felda Taib Andak could be promoted as a tourist destination with visitors experiencing first-hand green activities such as the cultivation of organic plants, production of compost from food waste, air pollution control, recycling rainwater, free open burning zones, river conservation, pedestrian sites, energy saving projects and honey bamboo planting,” he said.
The Low Carbon Village project was made possible by the collaboration of several parties. “In addition to UTM and Felda, other agencies involved include Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) with international collaboration from the University of Kyoto, Okayama University and the National Institute of Environmental Science (NIES) of Japan,” Wahid Omar said.

The project was coordinated by the Centre for Community Industrial Network (CCIN) through funding from the University Community Transformation Center (UCTC) Ministry of Education.

This project is in line with the National Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) which focuses on high-impact programs, rapid implementation, low cost and sustainability.

Success of the Low Carbon Village project in Felda Taib Andak will be a catalyst in the formation of other Low Carbon Villages throughout the country.

Also at the launching ceremony were Saifullah Mat Nor, Johor Bahru Felda General Manager, Yunus Ali, Manager of Felda Taib Andak and also Acting Head of UTM Co- Green Research Fertilizer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haslenda Hashim.
