JOHOR BAHRU, 1 December 2014 – Four Pillars of management style practised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has proven to be effective in sustaining UTM’s  Research University (RU) status.
The four main pillars are Transparency, Delegation of Power (Empowerment), Confidence and Competence.
UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar while delivering his speech said that it this Four Pillars of Management Style practised that has enabled the university to achieve what it has today.
“Transparency means not to hide any information. Every month we organize a Monthly Engagement where the entire university community will be informed about UTM’s latest developments.”
“However, there are still things that are classified as confidential in accordance with the respective acts and to be kept confidential for some reason,” he said.
Prof. Wahid said this while speaking at the Monthly Engagement held at Dewan Sultan Iskandar, UTM Johor Bahru.
Effective empowerment has the ability to assist an organization to function efficiently. For this reason, in order to facilitate daily administration, the university management has empowered heads of the respective responsibility centres to make decisions.”
“This is to reduce red tapes and expedite the implementation of decisions made,” he said.
In performing various day to day affairs of the university, the employees responsible have to earn the trust of his superiors, especially when entrusted to handle confidential matters.
“Do not lose trust because it would complicate any job relating with daily affairs,” he said.
Efficiency level is also emphasized among university administrators as it is closely associated with the professional image projected.
“We really care about this, especially among management staff. This is because every employee appointed are given specific tasks that need to be done on a continuous basis. If not properly manged, it will definitely tarnish our reputation, “he said.
Prof. Wahid then launched a book entitled ‘Membina Kerjaya Akademia’ written by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd. Azraai Kassim.
He later received contributions  to the UTM Endowment Fund from various Centre of Responsibilities (PTJ) totaling RM 92,121.25.
Also present were the respective Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVC), namely, Prof. Dr. Rose Alinda Alias (DVC Academic and International), Prof. Ir. Dr. Azraai Kassim (DVC Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Mohd Ismail Abd Aziz (DVC Student Affairs and Alumni), and Prof Dr. Azlan Abdul Rahman (DVC Development). Also present was UTM’s Registrar, En. Wan Mohd Zawawi Wan Abd Rahman.
