JOHOR BAHRU, Mar 11 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) International successfully collaborated with Yayasan Warisan Johor to organize a cultural immersion program titled Simulasi Lawatan at Kompleks Yayasan Warisan Johor, aimed at introducing international students to the rich traditions and heritage of Johor.
Designed to offer students a meaningful cultural experience beyond the classroom, the program brought participants to several iconic heritage locations, allowing them to engage directly with local traditions and gain a deeper understanding of the Bangsa Johor identity. A total of 40 international students participated in the program, comprising 15 full-time students and 25 exchange students from various countries. The initiative not only promoted cultural appreciation but also strengthened friendship and interaction among students from diverse backgrounds.
The journey began at Rumah Limas Johor, where students were introduced to the architectural uniqueness and cultural philosophy behind traditional Malay houses in Johor. From there, participants continued their exploration through a series of interactive checkpoints, each highlighting different elements of Johorean culture, including traditional attire, performing arts, and culinary heritage.
One of the highlights of the programme was the visit to Serambi Tradisi Johor, where students learned about the philosophy and significance behind Busana Melayu, the traditional Malay attire. Many participants enthusiastically took the opportunity to wear the traditional costumes, including the Baju Melayu and Songkok. For many of them, it was their first experience dressing in traditional Malay attire, making the moment both memorable and meaningful.

The cultural journey continued at Rumah Zapin, where students were introduced to the history and significance of Zapin Johor, one of the state’s most treasured traditional dances. Rather than simply observing, students actively participated in a hands-on session where they learned the basic steps of Zapin Lambak. They were also introduced to traditional musical instruments, such as the gambus, marwas, and dok, which added a deeper appreciation of the art form.
Another key highlight of the program was the Program Bubur Lambuk Warisan 2026, which brought together international students and members of the local community in preparing the traditional savoury porridge. Working side-by-side with locals, students experienced the spirit of gotong–royong, a communal practice deeply rooted in Malay culture. The activity not only introduced them to local culinary traditions but also fostered social bonding and meaningful cultural exchange.

The program later continued with visits to Galeri Seni Johor and Galeri Tenun, where participants explored contemporary art exhibitions and learned about the rich history of Johor’s weaving heritage.
The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students. Many participants shared that the experience allowed them to step outside the classroom and engage directly with Malaysia’s living heritage. One exchange student remarked that although they had seen traditional Malay clothing and dances before, the opportunity to wear the attire and learn the dance themselves made them feel more connected to their host country.
This initiative reflects UTM’s aspiration to nurture holistic graduates who are not only academically excellent but also culturally aware, socially engaged, and globally minded. Through programs such as Simulasi Lawatan, UTM continues to strengthen its commitment to building an inclusive and vibrant international campus community while preserving and celebrating local heritage.
