KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Prof. Sr Gs. Dr. Mazlan Hashim, a leading expert in geospatial science and satellite-based Earth observation, has been appointed to the Expert Review Panel responsible for evaluating the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) under the Malaysia Space Exploration 2030 (MSE2030) framework.

The initiative, coordinated by the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), aims to assess Malaysia’s progress in building a sustainable and competitive national space ecosystem. The review will measure achievements across 92 KPIs aligned with MSE2030’s seven strategic thrusts, which span governance, innovation, industry development, infrastructure readiness, and human capital strengthening.

“This review is crucial to ensure that Malaysia’s investments in the space sector deliver measurable national benefit,” Prof. Mazlan said. “We must look beyond technological milestones to understand how these initiatives strengthen sustainability, innovation, and the nation’s scientific resilience.”

The evaluation framework is structured across three timelines. The short-term phase (2021–2025) focuses on governance, regulatory enhancement, and foundational systems. The medium-term phase (2026–2028) emphasises national satellite development and Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) capabilities. The long-term phase (2029–2030) assesses economic impact, industry competitiveness, and Malaysia’s leadership in the regional space sector. The review process incorporates data validation, stakeholder consultations, and evidence-based performance verification across MYSA, MOSTI, and the National Committee on Space (JANGKA). The first short-term KPI assessment was conducted from 2 to 4 November 2025.

Prof. Mazlan’s appointment underscores UTM’s longstanding leadership in Malaysia’s space and geospatial research. The university’s contributions include the development of remote-sensing instruments, operation of satellite data facilities, and the training of professionals in space technologies, geoinformatics, and Earth observation analytics.

“UTM’s research aligns closely with MSE2030’s vision,” Prof. Mazlan added. “Our goal is to empower Malaysia’s space ecosystem with technology, talent, and trusted data.” The panel’s findings will shape the Malaysia Space Industry Strategic Plan 2030, ensuring transparent, evidence-based progress toward a self-reliant and internationally recognised space sector.
