HO CHI MINH, Nov 26 – The Biomedical Networking and Innovation Club (BIONIC) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently organized a successful global outreach program in collaboration with the International University at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM). This program featured a hands-on workshop and a lab visit in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, showcasing 3D-printed prosthetic hands while promoting cross-cultural collaboration and technological advancements for the benefit of society.
The UTM delegation included two lecturers, Ts. Dr. Mohd Riduan Mohamad and Dr. Muhammad Faiz Md. Shakhih, along with 16 undergraduate students from various courses. Eight of these students acted as facilitators, guiding participants from VNUHCM through engaging activities such as prosthetic hand grafting and electronic hand demonstrations.
Participants had the unique opportunity to collaboratively construct their own hand prosthetics, gaining hands-on engineering experience in a practical setting. Beyond developing technical skills, the workshop also facilitated knowledge and cultural exchange between students from both universities, strengthening the bond between UTM and VNUHCM.
The program culminated in a friendly mini-competition where participants were evaluated on the prosthetic hands they assembled. The tasks tested the dexterity, strength, and speed of the hands, with participants completing five challenges under time constraints. This activity not only assessed the technical capabilities of prosthetics but also aimed to cultivate empathy by simulating the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
After the workshop, the UTM delegation was taken on a guided tour of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This visit included the Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, as well as the Laboratory of Instrumentation Design. Students and lecturers had the opportunity to explore state-of-the-art research facilities and discuss potential areas for future collaboration.
A lecturer from VNUHCM emphasized the possibility of mutual exchanges, suggesting that UTM students could consider completing their internships in Vietnam. This would further strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions.
The program concluded with both parties reflecting on the success of this collaborative initiative. The smooth execution of the program showcased the dedication of both universities to enhancing education and fostering innovation. The event highlighted the value of sharing knowledge selflessly, setting a strong foundation for future partnerships.
The Global Outreach Program UTM-VNUHCM’24 improved participants’ skills and understanding of prosthetic technology and emphasized the importance of global collaboration in achieving significant outcomes.
