The 16th International Surveying Conference for Undergraduates (ISCU), organised by the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), concluded on April 20, 2024, at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), marking a significant achievement for students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

This prestigious event, held over two days from April 19 to 20, brought together a vibrant community of young scholars, educators, and professionals in the field of surveying to share insights, foster collaborations, and showcase innovative research.

Students from the  Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) programme shone brightly, clinching several top honours, underscoring their excellence and innovative contributions to the field. Emily Yong Liyu from the Bachelor of Science in Land Administration and Development with Honours, led the charge with two accolades, securing the Best Innovation Award for her ground-breaking research and a Special Mention Paper Award for her insightful presentation.

Her peer, Luqman Hilmi bin Sallehhuddin, was also recognised with a Special Mention Paper Award, highlighting his detailed and impactful research paper. Lizawati binti Sahid rounded out UTM’s winners, taking home the Bronze Award for her commendable research efforts.

While for Quantity Surveying Department, 13 awards were hauled in the prestigious event. Among the standout achievers, Muhamad Syafiq bin Kamarulzaman emerged as a beacon of excellence, securing both the Potential Research Award and Gold Award for his outstanding research paper.

Another luminary in the cohort, Yuken a/l Balakrishnan had captured the attention of the panels with his dynamic presentation skills which earned him the Best Paper Presenter for the session. Not only that, his research paper also garnered significant acclaim where he secured the esteemed Bronze Award.

Muhammad Amirul Syakir bin Shahrul Rizal secured the Excellence Poster Award. His intellectually compelling poster presentation had captured the attention of the audience when he effectively conveyed the complex concepts of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Value Engineering (VE) with clarity and creativity.

Not to forget, Muhamad Hafiz Kaisan bin Mohd Azaki and Lee Pei Sin, representing the Bachelor of Construction (Hons.) managed to pull the Bronze Award for their research paper. Their efforts underscored the interdisciplinary nature of construction studies and demonstrated UTM’s commitment in nurturing diverse talents.

For the poster presentation category, Christabelle Jemin James, Teoh Shu Jou and Nur Ellmeera Natasha Mohamad each received prestigious Gold Awards for their outstanding work. Additionally, Fifi Nurfatihah Md Sani earned a Silver Award, and Teo Yi Xian was honored with a Bronze Award. This recognition highlights the exceptional talent and dedication of the student and showcasing their contributions to the academic community.

The conference not only served as a platform for recognising emerging talents in surveying but also fostered a dynamic environment for exchanging ideas and advancing the discipline. The success of UTM students at this event is a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence in education and research.
