UTM IBD & UNJ One Day Workshop ‘Biohealth in Tropics: Herbal & Microbial Resources’

The Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) strives to make the most of the opportunities it presents by forming global partnerships and promoting relations with other institutions.

With the challenge of the pandemic, IBD realized that it is much easier to work with foreign counterparts in the publication where the scientific papers are co-authored internationally.

Therefore, the celebration of the successful framework of 50 joint publications between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) IBD and Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) during the three years collaboration has become the highlight in the event of ‘A One-Day UTM IBD-UNJ Workshop’ with the theme ‘Biohealth in Tropics: Herbal and Microbial Resources’.

Hosted online, this event was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor of UTM, YBhg. Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail and the Rector of UNJ, YBhg. Prof. Dr. Komarudin.

Initiated by the Director of IBD, Prof. Hesham Ali El Enshasy, and Dean, FMCIA of UNJ, YBhg. Prof. Dr. Muktiningsih N., M.S.I., this workshop was attended by the academics, researchers and students from both universities to share knowledge, experiences, and research on all aspects of herbal and microbial processes.

Also present was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), YBhg. Prof. Dr. Rosli Md Illias.

UTM Vice-Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail said, “This workshop has benefited both universities in sharing academic knowledge and research initiatives and would also bring many benefits to the community, universities, and industries. The success of 50 joint publications between the Institute of Bioproduct Development, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Universitas Negeri Jakarta have developed strong international connections and would further enhance the global prominence for both parties nationally and globally”.

In addition to that, YBhg. Prof. Dr. Komarudin in his speech has also stated that, “Through collaboration, partners can share costs and resources, access high-end facilities, synergize one another’s expertise, share new techniques, skills and knowledge, fortify areas of deficiencies and gain through diversity in professional cultures”.

This event is another productive collaborative activity following the series of courses and conferences jointly organized by the two institutions.

Moreover, the efforts between the two parties have created a series of successful bilateral relations between both institutions, especially in research and innovation through an extension of the Letter of Collaboration (LoC) agreement that was signed on 14th December 2018 followed by the Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) on 25th August 2020.

This One Day UTM IBD-UNJ Workshop also featured a series of talks given by 10 prominent researchers from UTM IBD and UNJ who shared their experiences in making impactful industrial and applied biotechnologies in the herbal and microbial processes.

YBhg. Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail in his concluding remarks praised the effort from both universities for conducting a workshop on ‘Biohealth in Tropic: Herbal & Microbial Resources’ and also for the highest numbers of publications published with international partner.

He stressed that the role of academic staff is very important to be successful in any university with the nature of our business in research and education.

He also congratulated the presenters and found the topics presented very interesting and hoped to organize many events in the future.

Prof. Dr. Hesham Ali El Enshasy thanked all for the excellent organization of the workshop.

He encouraged the team to work as a big family for the next upcoming workshop and to be actively involved and participate in various workshops to expose and gain knowledge as well as to publish as many publications with the world class rating.
