JOHOR BAHRU, 6 Feb. — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) student from School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering, Faaiq Fajari Fauzan has secured First Place in ASEAN-India Hackaton 2021.

Faaiq Fajari Fauzan, the representative of UTM and part of the Malaysian delegation under the auspices of the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education was selected to be part of the competition.

According to him, the team has developed a machine learning with website development and mobile application for finding AIS inactivity data in classifying for prevent marine criminal, and won by first price 2700 USD.

“Honestly, I didn’t really expect to win because I was just learning. and this is the first time participating in a hackathon and direct competition at the ASEAN-India level.

Our team has developed solutions for tracking illegal marine activity, particularly tracking and marking ships that deliberately omit navigation tools by using machine learning and web development methods as well as a mobile application that supports monitoring and tracking for ships,” he said.

The ASEAN-INDIA Hackathon, an initiative by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi, was a 36 hours Hackathon which offered unique opportunities to all 10 ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam) and India to forward their economic development through collaboration in education, science and technology.

Some of the suggested areas include blue economy, agriculture, tourism, health care and medical devices, environment, education, water and smart cities and campuses (involving energy, transportation, security).

Accroding to its website, this hackathon has been going on for 3 days, and was attended by 11 countries, with a total of 330 students also 11 Problem Statement that divide from each team.

It was a great experience and thanks to my team of colleagues who came from different countries with Dheeraj (India), Bobby (Laos), Sua (Myanmar), Bharath (India), and Neak (Cambodia)! Thanks also to our mentors for guiding us and the committee on making the hackathon experience an interesting one.This hackathon has been held for 3 days and was attended by 11 countries with a total of 330 best students from each country.

The event was wrapped up with remark from Minister from ASEAN countries and Prime Minister of India, including Minister of Higher Education Malaysia – Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad.
