JOHOR BAHRU, 26 November 2015 – A total of 5 academic staff and postgraduate students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) won awards at the 2015 Malaysian Association of Science and Mathematics Award or Persatuan Sains dan Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) 2015.
The awards won were for the Book Category (Original Work), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Category and Master’s Thesis Category. All the awards were presented by the Pro-Chancellor of UTM, Tan Sri Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor at the opening ceremony of the 23rd National Symposium on Mathematical Sciences or Simposium Kebangsaan Sains dan Matematik (SKSM23) at Pulai Spring Resort, Johor Bahru, Johor.
SKSM23 Secretary General, Dr. Zaiton Sidin said the winner of the Book (Original Work) Category was joint writers Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hazlina Selamat and Prof. Dr. Datin Rubiyah Yusof through their book ‘Introduction to Adaptive and Self-Tuning Control’ published by UTM Press.
“The runner up winner of the PhD thesis category was Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohd Kasim  with his thesis entitled ‘Convective Boundary Layer Flow of Viscoelastic Fluid’.  Dr. Abdul Rahman is now serving Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) as lecturer, “she said.
The PERSAMA award of 2015 also saw Noraihan Afiqah Rawi winning the 2nd place for the Master’s Thesis Category  through her thesis ‘Effects of inducing g-jitter on Mixed Convection Flow Past an Inclined Stretching Sheet’ . Another UTM winner in the same category was Ahmad Qushairi Mohamad who won 3rd place for his thesis ‘Exact Solutions of Free Convection Flow in Second Grade Fluid Rotating Magnetohydrodynamics an Infinite Past Vertical Plate’.
Speaking on SKSM23, Dr. Zaiton said the program was organized with the aim of bringing together professionals from all sectors to encourage collaboration, networking and sharing of knowledge of the mathematical sciences.
“It also provides a platform for mathematicians to share their findings and triggering creativity and innovation in the field of quantitative research.
“Through this program, researchers are also able to highlight their new discoveries and innovations while promoting interaction and cooperation among themselves in the field of mathematical research,” she said.
SKSM23 was chaired by UTM Faculty of Science, Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rohanin Ahmad.

Winners of 2nd Place of consolation prize of PhD Thesis category, Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohd Kasim received his award from UTM Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor at the opening ceremony of 23rd SKSM at Pulai Springs Resort.
