JOHOR BAHRU, July 8, 2015 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has launched two professional computer courses at certificate level to support the aspirations of the country to produce data scientists.
Both courses, namely, the Professional Certificate Data Science and Big Data Analytics, were announced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ir. Dato ‘Dr. Wahid Omar at the July staff engagement, held at Dewan Sultan Iskandar Johor Bahru campus.
UTM Big Data Centre Director, Prof. Dr. Siti Mariyam Shamsuddin said the two courses offered will contribute towards producing data scientists and big data analytics, professionals who have the skills and ability to harness the power of data for new insights.
“The Professional Certificate issued by the UTM Big Data Centre is unique from any professional computer courses currently available in private training centres, particularly in terms of focus, career paths and quality.
“One existing on the market only focused on one goal, which is usually accompanied with software that must be applied while the certificates offered by UTM Big Data Centre has a professional certificate that provides a career path (career path) as a Data Scientist or Big Data Analyst,” he said.
The UTM Big Data Centre also offers two basic courses, namely Introduction to Data Science and Design Science Data and Big Data Analytics.
Talking about the course, Prof. Siti Mariyam explained that the Professional Certificate and Professional Certificate in Science Data Big Data Analytics are two different things.
Professional Certificate Data Science is open to all professionals, students, industry and government sectors that have a background either in pure sciences, applied sciences, education, arts and humanities, such as statistics, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, management, business, science social, marketing and advertising, tourism and so on.
Whereas Certificate Big Data Analytics is open to all professionals, students, industry and government sectors that have an educational background in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics and equivalent.
Compared to the Data Science course, the Big Data Analytics course will produce more technically skilled individuals, geared towards basic notations such as NoSQL, Hadoop and map reduce, big data platforms and several programming languages such as R and CUDA.
Both courses will be conducted at the UTM Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur campuses based on the needs of the participants.
Before ending the course and obtaining their respective certificates, participants will have to solve real problems in the industry, applying what they have learnt in the course.
“UTM Big Data Centre has identified several industries such as NVIDIA Corporation, Petronas ICT Sdn. Bhd, Al-Ikhsan Sdn. Bhd, Hasro Furniture Sdn. Bhd, and Nasi Lemak Malaysia, to name a few that will be involved in supporting the production of the professional certificates.
The UTM Computer Professional Certificate Course is offered in three packages namely Alpha, Beta and Gamma. Alpha involves a period of 3 months with a fee of RM 4,999.00, followed by the Beta with a duration of 2 months at RM 5,999.00 and Gamma, conducted within a duration of 7 days at a cost of RM 7,999.00.
