SERDANG, 7 May – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) joined four other Research Universities (RU) in the Media Event Showcasing Reserach Universities’ Success Stories Exhibition held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) yesterday.

The event was held  from May 6th to May 7th, 2013 at Pusat Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PKKSSAAS), and was officiated by the Minister of Education II, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.
This two-day Exhibition displays the success of RU in producing outstanding talents under the sub-themes of sustainability, entrepreneurship, environmental issues, food safety and the health and well-being.

The RU status of UTM calls for attention to capacity building and talent management. UTM nurtures the diverse talents within the UTM community and celebrates the vitality that they bring. These talents are the champions of innovations, which are needed in order to remain competitive in this globalised world. Here we showcase several exceptional UTM talents, the selection of which is based on a number of distinct criteria, namely, producing commercially viable products, giving impact to the community, and becoming successful entrepreneurs or iconic figures.

Among exemplary UTM talents prolifically involved in research and innovation showcased at the event include Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, Prof. Dr. Amran Hamzah, Prof. Dr. Tharek Abd. Rahman, Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Yusop, Prof Ramlan Aziz and Prof. Ibrahim Ngah.
The Government introduced the RU programme in 2007 to kick-start and drive the K-Economy that will intensify the government’s efforts to achieve a developed nation status by 2020.
UTM together with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaya (UM) were selected as the RU as these are the top universities based among others on their talents, research culture and facilities.
The RU policy has resulted in the creation of high-tech and state of the art labs or Centers of Excellence that not only allows for highly sophisticated research work but also enables talents to be identified and nurtured.
