LONDON, Sep 16 — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Imperial College London have renewed their longstanding academic partnership through the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), paving the way for wider collaboration in research, education and global talent development.

The renewed agreement marks another important milestone in a relationship between the two universities that has spanned more than 15 years. Building on renewed engagement since 2023, both institutions have continued to strengthen their cooperation through student mobility programmes, international internships, academic staff attachments and collaborative research involving academics and researchers from both universities.

Among the key areas of mutual interest are Chemical Engineering, Carbon Capture, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Sustainable Engineering. These areas reflect the complementary strengths of UTM and Imperial College London, as well as their shared commitment to advancing research and innovation that can contribute towards addressing contemporary global challenges.

The MoU was formally signed by UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, and Provost of Imperial College London, Prof. Peter Haynes, in the presence of senior academic leaders and representatives from both institutions.

The renewed agreement provides a stronger institutional framework for both universities to expand joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, knowledge sharing and global talent development. It also reflects the continued evolution of the UTM–Imperial relationship from individual and project-based collaborations towards a more structured, integrated and sustainable institutional partnership.

Academic and alumni networks have also played an important role in sustaining and advancing the relationship between the two institutions. Among them is Professor Jerry Heng, a distinguished UTM alumnus currently based at Imperial College London. His continued engagement, together with contributions from academic colleagues at both institutions, has helped strengthen academic connections and create further opportunities for collaboration in research, teaching and student development.

During the visit, the UTM delegation also met three UTM students currently undertaking industrial training at Imperial College London, comprising two students from the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering (FKT) and one student from the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT).

Their placement represents one of the tangible outcomes of the UTM–Imperial partnership, providing students with valuable international exposure and first-hand learning experiences within a globally recognised academic and research environment. Such opportunities are also important in strengthening students’ professional competencies, global perspectives and readiness to contribute within increasingly international and multidisciplinary settings.

Through the renewed MoU, UTM and Imperial College London are expected to further expand opportunities for students, academics and researchers, while developing collaborative initiatives with meaningful academic, research and societal impact.

The partnership reflects UTM’s continued commitment to strengthening high-impact global academic networks founded on trust, continuity and shared ambition, while creating greater opportunities for knowledge exchange, research excellence and international talent development.
