KAZAN, May 18 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) continues to strengthen its international strategic network through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kazan Federal University (KFU), Russia, aimed at expanding collaboration in research, innovation, talent development and future technologies that contribute to sustainable global development.

The signing ceremony, held at KFU’s historic main building, UTM represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali Selamat on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of UTM, while KFU was represented by Vice-Rector for Oil and Gas Technologies, Environmental Management and Earth Sciences, Dr. Danis Nurgaliev.

Also present from UTM was the Director of UTM International, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Ariffin Abu Hassan.

This strategic collaboration brings together the strengths of two leading institutions in technology, energy, engineering, and innovation. Founded in 1804, KFU is internationally recognised for its expertise in earth sciences, oil and gas technologies, environmental management and multidisciplinary research, while UTM continues to strengthen its reputation as Malaysia’s leading engineering and technology university on the global stage.

According to Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali, the collaboration is more than an academic partnership; it serves as a strategic platform to advance high-impact research, global talent development, and future technology solutions that can benefit society worldwide.

“The collaboration between UTM and Kazan Federal University reflects our shared commitment to building a more sustainable, inclusive, and future-oriented global innovation ecosystem. By combining the expertise of both universities, we are able to accelerate technological advancement and nurture global talents capable of addressing future global challenges,” he said.

He further emphasised that the partnership focuses on student and staff mobility, joint research, expertise sharing, as well as the development of low-carbon technologies and sustainable energy solutions.

Among the key future collaboration areas are the exploration of a joint research platform in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), sustainable energy technologies, climate change, low-carbon technologies, and sustainability-driven innovation. The collaboration is also aligned with the aspirations of the UTM ASCEND 2030 Strategic Plan in strengthening research excellence, high-impact innovation, global networking and future-ready talent development, while supporting Malaysia’s higher education internationalisation agenda.

The MoU is expected to create greater opportunities for joint research, academic exchange, technology development, student and staff mobility, and the development of innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable development and global well-being.
