The program features IoT-based smart vehicle prototypes developed by UTM students, controllable via a custom mobile app, with plans to scale up and potentially expand nationwide. This initiative aligns with UTM’s commitment to industry collaboration and sustainable innovation.

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 January – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) marked a significant milestone with the pre-launch of its Smart Mobility Campus Program, officiated by UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, together with Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Nurulakmar Abu Husain, Dean of the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT).

The exclusive session, held at the UTM Kuala Lumpur campus, featured a comprehensive briefing to the Vice-Chancellor on the programme’s concept, progress, and future direction. The briefing was led by Dr. Nurulakmar alongside the core project team, comprising Ts. Dr. Zulhasni Abdul Rahim (Project Leader), Dr. Liyana Adilla Burhanuddin, and Mr. Rasheaduzzaman, a Software Engineering student who serves as the project’s fleet manager.

The Smart Mobility Campus mobile application, developed by UTM students, enables real-time monitoring and remote control of smart vehicles as part of the UTM–PERODUA collaboration.

Developed in strategic collaboration with national automotive leader PERODUA, the Smart Mobility Campus Program is designed to enhance student safety, mobility, and entrepreneurial development. The initiative enables safe and efficient travel between campus and residential colleges, while simultaneously providing students with hands-on experience in startup development, application engineering, and smart fleet management systems.

During the session, Ts. Dr. Zulhasni presented the progress of three smart vehicle prototypes developed under Phase One of the project. These vehicles are equipped with advanced IoT-based technologies and smart control features integrated through a custom-built mobile application developed by UTM students. A live demonstration showcased real-time remote access and control of the vehicle, highlighting the practical impact of student-led innovation.

Subject to a successful evaluation of Phase One by PERODUA’s management later this month, the project is set to scale up under Phase Two with the deployment of an additional 12 smart vehicles. In the longer term, the initiative aspires to expand beyond UTM, paving the way for the adoption of smart mobility ecosystems across campuses and institutions nationwide.
