SEPANG, Sept 26 – Excitement filled the air as 30 students from Year 5 of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Taman Seroja, Sepang took part in Smart with AI in English: Learn, Create, Share, a community outreach program organized by MJIIT Mathematics Unit and supported by the Research Unit, Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) Community Grant.
For some students, it was their very first introduction to the generative artificial intelligence (AI). The real highlight came when the students create their very own interactive e-book using ChatGPT and Canva, customized their very own AI-generated story book content into something educational, fun, and meaningful.

More than just a technology workshop, the program aimed to nurture digital confidence, encourage independent learning, and inspire reading culture. The e-books produced by students will soon be part of the school’s Nadi Ilmu Amalan Membaca (NILAM) reading project, giving students the joy of reading books created by their own peers. This will be a meaningful step towards promoting literacy and lifelong learning.

The session was led by Dr. Hafizah Farhah Saipan @ Saipol and Dr. Shahirah Abu Bakar. Teachers including the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) coordinator, Suhaida Ismail; Intervention Plan for the School Transformation Program 2025 (PiNTAS TS25) coordinator, Zairina Dawam @ Muhamad Daum; Information and Communication Technology (ICT) coordinator, Jemahliah Mohamed Salleh; and Head of English Panel, Aznita Saipol also played an important role as facilitators to ensure that every student had chances to learn, explore and enjoy the process.

The students expressed genuine excitement for being able to produce their own book. For many, it was their very first encounter using technology not just as a tool, but as a way to express creativity. The experience gave them greater confidence to explore digital platforms, encouraged independent learning, and inspired them to think in new and imaginative ways. Students were eager to share their feeling after the session, with comments like, “I like how they teach us new things with AI” and “Now I know how to make my own book using Canva”. Many also expressed interests in joining similar programs in the future.
Beyond the classroom, the initiative also reflects a broader purpose that bridges technology, education, and community development. By aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure), the program highlights how meaningful education and innovation can be integrated into school activities. It also reflects MJIIT’s commitment to extend university expertise beyond campus walls by empowering communities through knowledge and technology.
Through initiatives like this, MJIIT continues to inspire the young learners and equip them with the mindset and skills to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. This initiative reflects UTM’s commitment to shaping future-ready generations by empowering young learners to explore, create and innovate together for a better future.
