JOHOR BAHRU, July 23 – The Faculty of Civil Engineering (FKA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has successfully concluded the second edition of its Professional Training for BIM (Revit). This follows the success of the first session in October 2024, which marked the faculty’s first structured initiative in Building Information Modelling (BIM) training for academic staff. The two-day programme, held from 22 to 23 July 2025, took place at the BIM Laboratory, D02, FKA UTM. Unlike the previous session, this latest edition was designed specifically for undergraduate students. A total of 31 students took part in the training, including 23 from the full-time programme and 8 part-time students from the UTM School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). The group comprised both local and international students.
The training was conducted by Ir. Ts. Mohd Faiz Shapiai, a certified Revit professional and Senior Civil Engineer from the BIM Unit, Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia. With his extensive experience in BIM implementation and project management, participants were guided through practical applications and industry-standard modelling workflows.
This hands-on training provided students with essential skills in using Autodesk Revit for structural modelling, in line with current best practices and the increasing adoption of BIM in the construction sector. Participants were introduced to core modelling techniques and learned how to create plans, sections, and elevation drawings, with reference to JKR standards.

“Participating this BIM training was a truly beneficial experience. I gained hands-on exposure to creating essential construction drawings such as plans, sections and elevations using Revit. One of the highlights of the training was understanding how Revit integrates with structural analysis software, offering a clearer picture of how engineers and designers collaborate using shared models. This kind of interdisciplinary workflow is something we don’t often get to experience in the classroom. I sincerely hope more students will be given the opportunity to benefit from similar training in the future,” said Nasha Nazri, one of the participating students.
Another participant, Abdelrahman Abdellatif, an international student from Sudan, added: “This experience not only improved my technical knowledge but also exposed me to Malaysian industry practices. I look forward to applying these skills when I return to my country.”
During the closing ceremony, Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamad Hidayat Jamal, Deputy Dean (Academic), extended his appreciation to the facilitators and organising committee. He acknowledged their commitment in making the programme a success and encouraged students to apply the knowledge gained in their future careers. He also expressed hope that this training would give graduating students an added advantage as they enter the job market.
Each participant received a certificate of completion, signifying their competency in fundamental BIM applications using Revit Structure. This initiative reflects UTM’s ongoing commitment to equipping students with industry-relevant skills through practical, skill-based training that bridges academic learning with real-world engineering practice.
