JOHOR BAHRU, Apr 17 – The recent Postgraduate Meet and Greet with Cultural Exchange 202425-2 of Language Academy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was successfully held on 17 April 2025. The programme featured a cultural exchange programme, highlighting the profound influence of sociocultural literacy in building connections and understanding among the participants. This vibrant session brought together postgraduate students, academic staff, and non-academic staff in an engaging atmosphere filled with bonding, learning, and cultural sharing.

The programme, which was initiated by the Chair of Language Academy, Associate Professor Dr. Hadina Habil, aimed to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for new Master’s and PhD students, strengthening their self-confidence while offering moral and academic encouragement. It also served as a platform to enhance the educational quality of the postgraduate programmes at Language Academy by introducing students to academic staff and representatives from the students’ management of the faculty. A warm welcome by the Associate Chair of Language Academy, Dr Nur’ain Balqis Haladin, invited the participants, especially students, to embrace the diversity of culture as a value-added essence in their journey of learning at Language Academy, FSSH. Emphasising ethical research and responsibility fostered values and identity among students, in line with the university’s ISES (integrity, sustainability, excellence and synergy) values.

A key highlight of the event was the cultural exchange segment, which offered participants the chance to celebrate and appreciate the rich cultural diversity within the UTM postgraduate community. This not only created a sense of belonging but also contributed to the development of moral, cognitive, and professional values among students. The participants were captivated by the vibrant performances and cultural insights shared during the event. Among the highlights were two enthusiastic students from West Visayas State University (WVSU), who brought an array of colourful traditions to the gathering. The engagement strengthened the collaboration between Language Academy, FSSH, UTM and WVSU.
Through their engaging performances and insightful sharing of their Philippine culture, they added a lively spirit and depth to the experience, leaving everyone inspired and enriched.

In addition to the cultural activities shared by Malaysian students, China, and the Philippines, the event featured a variety of language exchange and learning activities. Enthusiastic staff and students participated, showcasing their talents and their proficiency in English as the medium of communication. The event also highlighted the importance of introducing oneself in one’s native language. It was a breathtaking experience that refreshed the perspective of the participants on how diverse languages and dialects impact communication.

Language Academy extends its gratitude to all who contributed to this programme’s success and looks forward to more initiatives that continue to promote inclusivity, academic excellence, and intercultural understanding.
