We are proud to share the incredible success of our Bachelor of Civil Engineering students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), who recently showcased their innovation at the Johor International Innovation, Invention Competition and Symposium (JIIICS) 2024, organized by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Pasir Gudang, Johor.
Their project, titled “Bioluminescent Dinoflagellate Light Bulb” that oriented on appropriate technology design captivated the judges and earned them not only the coveted Gold Medal Award but also the Best Poster Award in the higher education category. These accolades reflect not only the ingenuity of the project but also the hard work and dedication of the talented students behind it.
The innovative team consists of Dylan Tay Wang An, Niclaronce Ling How Jun, and Ang Zhong Xian, all of whom are Year 3 students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FKA). Their efforts were expertly guided by supervisors Ts. Dr. Mohd Khairul Afzan and Dr. Hazlami Fikri Bakri, who provided invaluable mentorship throughout the project’s development.
This project that leverages the natural glow of bioluminescent dinoflagellates to create sustainable lighting solutions, presenting a novel approach to eco-friendly innovation. The team’s creativity and scientific insight enabled them to stand out in a highly competitive field, where they went head-to-head with 284 other innovative products from across the globe. Their success serves as a testament to the excellence fostered at UTM and highlights the innovative spirit of FKA.
We are immensely proud of the entire team for representing UTM with such distinction.
