KUALA LUMPUR, 21 Apr. – Hoh Chew Wen, a final-year Mechatronics Engineering student from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), achieved notable success in the Huawei Malaysia Sales Elite Challenge 2024. Competing against talented individuals nationwide, Chew Wen was selected as one of the Top 50 finalists and ultimately secured the prestigious 1st Runner-Up position as a member of the team called “The Chosen Ones.” Additionally, Chew Wen was recognized among the Top 10 best-performing individuals in the competition.
The competition combined elements of technology and business, providing a unique platform for Hoh to test her skills in real-world scenarios. The challenge involved tackling two complex case studies—one focused on business-to-consumer (B2C) and the other on business-to-business (B2B)—over an intense two-week period. Chew Wen was assigned to Group 1, later named “The Chosen Ones,” and collaborated with team members Chai Kok Cheng, Aisya Batrisyia, Chia Xin Ru, and Lee Qin Zheng, who came from different universities with various academic and professional backgrounds.
“Our journey began with regular online discussions, meeting every two to three days to refine our pitch deck,” Chew Wen said, reflecting on the rigorous preparation. “Despite the late-night sessions and the challenges of working with a new team, our determination brought us closer, and we were able to deliver strong presentations.”
On Day 1 of the Grand Finale, held on 19 April 2024, the team visited the Huawei flagship store at The Exchange TRX to gain deeper insights into the company’s business operations. They then presented their first case study, which focused on the launch of the Huawei MatePad 11.5-inch PaperMatte Edition. Chew Wen played a pivotal role in introducing the product, detailing its specifications, key selling points, and the core technology that addresses users’ pain points.
The following day, April 20, 2024, the team focused on a B2B case study. They presented a pitch for Huawei’s data center facility to C-level executives in hopes of securing a major contract. Chew Wen served as the product manager and impressed the judges with her in-depth technical knowledge and ability to meet the client’s needs. The judges asked challenging questions that required the team to think on their feet, providing a valuable learning experience for the young engineer.
The competition concluded with an award ceremony. “The Chosen Ones” were honored as the first Runner-Up, winning a cash prize of RM10,000. Chew Wen’s individual performance was outstanding, earning her a place among the Top 10 Best-Performing Individuals out of 50 participants.
“I found this competition to be a transformative experience,” Chew Wen said. “It enabled me to apply my technical knowledge in a business context while also improving my teamwork and problem-solving skills. I’m thankful to my team and Huawei Malaysia for this amazing opportunity.”
Chew Wen’s success in the 2024 Huawei Malaysia Sales Elite Challenge showcases her talent and dedication and emphasizes the high quality of education and training provided by UTM’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering. This achievement represents a significant milestone in her promising career as she prepares to graduate and enter the professional world.
