Successful One-Day Algebra Seminar Unites Researchers from UTM, UiTM and Indonesian Universities

The AAAG International Algebra Seminar 2024 (AIAS 2024) successfully brought together researchers from Malaysia and Indonesia specializing in pure mathematics, particularly in algebra. The seminar was organized by the Applied Algebra and Analysis Group (AAAG) with the aim of gathering prominent researchers, providing a platform for showcasing the latest research discoveries, and fostering interest and enthusiasm for pure mathematical research, with a specific emphasis on algebra.

The primary objective of AIAS 2024 was to bring together leading researchers from Malaysia and Indonesia to share their latest findings in algebra. The seminar aimed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, promote academic discussions, and provide valuable feedback to researchers. Additionally, the seminar aimed to encourage collaborations between universities in both countries.

The one-day seminar took place on June 25, 2024, at Lecture Hall 1, C17, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru, Johor. There were 34 participants, including 22 presenters representing UTM, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Mataram (Unram), and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). They shared their recent findings in algebra, creating a valuable opportunity for learning, discussion, and feedback.

The event was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zarina Mohd Khalid, Director of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, UTM Johor Bahru. AIAS 2024 aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by advocating for equitable education access and nurturing university collaborations. The seminar advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) through its commitment to accessible and inclusive education, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by promoting international cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia in the field of algebraic research.

AIAS 2024 has successfully created a collaborative environment where researchers can exchange knowledge and discuss their work. The seminar consisted of a series of presentations on recent findings in algebra, providing valuable opportunities for learning and feedback. The presentations at AIAS 2024 covered a wide range of topics in algebra. Several interesting findings were obtained from the seminar that could significantly impact the field. These findings not only contribute to the theoretical understanding of algebra and mathematics in general but also have practical applications in various scientific and engineering disciplines. One significant outcome of the seminar was that the papers presented were reviewed and will be published in the Proceedings of Science and Mathematics. This seminar also facilitated further research collaboration between UTM, UiTM, ITB, Unram, and UGM.

In addition to knowledge sharing, presenters were assessed for the Best Presenter Award. Congratulations to Lalu Riski Wirendra Putra (Unram), Abdul Gazir Syarifudin (ITB), and Yunita Septriana Anwar (UGM) for being recognized as the best presenters.

Ghazali Semil @ Ismail, both a presenter and a committee member for AIAS 2024, shared his insights from the seminar. He highlighted that the event provided exposure to the latest research findings and opportunities to collaborate with foreign universities. Gazir Syazir from ITB mentioned that he can explore many interesting topics in algebra for future research. Nur Athirah Farhana from UTM shared that she can apply her recent theoretical research to practical applications after hearing from all the presenters.

The seminar is expected to inspire further collaborations between universities in Malaysia and Indonesia. The exchange of knowledge is poised to benefit future research endeavors, and the exposure to researchers from both countries will enhance their work, ultimately bringing greater societal benefits.

The backbone of the seminar includes academic staff, alumni, and students from UTM.
