NSK-TriPreM Research Laboratory Opening Ceremony

On 27th November 2023, the researchers from Tribology and Precision Machining (TriPreM) i-kohza and NSK Ltd. representative, Mr. Sumio Sugita (Group Manager of Technology Development Department 1, New Field Products Development Center, Technology Development Division Headquarters) had a joyous opening ceremony for their new satellite laboratory, NSK-TriPreM Research Laboratory.

NSK Ltd. (日本精工株式会社, Nippon Seikō Kabushiki-gaisha, Japan Precision Company), is a large manufacturer of bearings globally and the largest in Japan. The company produces industrial machinery bearings, precision machinery and parts, and automotive bearings and components. The collaboration between NSK Ltd. and TriPreM was started in 2019 for a Fundamental Study on a mechanical element invention. The succession of this project was expected to be commercialized by NSK Ltd. as a potential technology in the future.

The ceremony started with a greeting exchange between Professor Ts. Dr. Ali Selamat, the Dean of Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Sengaku-Renkei Centre’s and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representatives, Head of TriPreM i-kohza, along with Mr. Sumio Sugita.

The ceremony was then continued with a plaque signing between Mr. Sugita and Prof. Ali and a laboratory visit. With assistance from TriPreM’s staff and postgraduate students, short briefings on ongoing projects and equipment were given to the visitors. In the evening, MJIIT students get to have career exposure with Mr. Sugita through a talk session hosted by the Japanese Language Culture Club (JLCC).

The success of this opening ceremony showcased a sustainable collaboration track between MJIIT and NSK Ltd. Through his visit on 27th and 28th Nov. 2023, Mr. Sugita expressed NSK Ltd.’s intention to accept more internship students and the possibility of hiring MJIIT alumni in the near future. As of today, there are Four (4) MJIIT alumni are currently working: Dr Izyan Iryani Mohd Yazid, Tan Eng Joo, Muhammad Faidhi Mohd Radzi, and Kua Loan Kiat, and One (1) student: Ikmal Alif Sukri is currently undergoing internship in NSK Ltd. Japan.
