JOHOR BAHRU, 28 June 2023 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is proud to announce its significant progress in the QS World University Rankings 2024. UTM has climbed an impressive 15 notches from #203 to #188, reaffirming its position among the world’s top universities. With this achievement, UTM once again secures a place in the prestigious top 200 university league.
The QS World University Rankings evaluates universities based on several key indicators, including academic reputation, faculty expertise, research output, international diversity, student satisfaction, and now, the introduction of three new indicators: Employment Outcome, International Research Network (IRN), and Sustainability. The revised weightages for all nine indicators reflect a more comprehensive and holistic assessment of university performance.
As an engineering and technology-based research-intensive university, UTM’s progress in the QS World University Rankings demonstrates its unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. As a testament to its achievements, UTM ranks among the top 13% globally of the 1,503 ranked universities, a remarkable accomplishment that reflects its sustained efforts in delivering quality education and impactful research outcomes pursuant to its enVision UTM 2025 Strategic Plan.

For the record, among Malaysian universities, UTM stands strong at number 5, cementing its position as a leading engineering and technology-based institution in the country. Additionally, UTM’s Citation per Faculty indicator has witnessed a remarkable improvement of 40 positions indicating a sound research output and productivity. Based on this indicator, UTM now ranks at number 2 in Malaysia, further demonstrating the university’s commitment to advancing knowledge and driving innovation.
Three indicators have achieved the Top 200 rankings for UTM: Employer Reputation, International Students, and Academic Reputation. These accolades further highlight UTM’s outstanding contributions to producing employable graduates, fostering an international learning environment, and maintaining academic excellence.
