KUALA LUMPUR, 20 March 2019 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students brought back RM 13,000.00 after being announced  as  the 1st and consolation prize winners in the Open Ideas Competition (OIC) for the year of 2019.
The first prize winners took away RM10,000.00 while the consolation prize winners brought home RM3,000.00 with them. The 2nd and 3rd prize went to the students from  Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
OIC 2019 was jointly organized by the Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA) and Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). It was the only design competition in Malaysia that acknowledged the collaboration effort between students from the architectural and civil engineering disciplines to compete as a team.
335 students and 35 supervisors from the  architecture and civil engineering disciplines from 12 universities all over the country took part in this competition. ‘REGIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL’ was the theme for this 12th edition of the competition.
The winning team comprised students from the Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying and School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. They were  Jonathan Chong, Chan Kei Wern, Chow Zhen Nam, Julius Wang,Wong Sheng Yuen and Aw Khai Hoong and were supervised by Dr. Abdul Halim Hussein and Ts. Mohd Zamri Ramli
The Prize Giving Ceremony was held in Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur . The Director General of Public Works Department Malaysia (JKR), Dato’ Sri Ir. Dr. Roslan bin Md.Taha who was also the President of Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA) gave away the prizes.
