Educational Collaboration Trip to Northern Italy

UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology recently has organised an educational collaboration trip to Northern Italy from 11th May until 19th May 2017. The trip involved ten students from MSc. Sustainable Urban Design (MSUD) Program and two accompanying lecturers (Dr. Mohammad Hussaini Wahab and Dr. Wan Nurul Mardiah Wan Mohd Rani). The trip was part of the program’s effort to expose the students internationally to the urban design theories and its application. The trip covered several cities within Northern Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, Siena and Pisa. The trip was also part of the Urban Dynamics and Regeneration Studio and Design Theory Method courses. By the end of the semester, the students were required to compile their travelogue that is expected to be published by the end of the year. Throughout the travel period, the students were required to experience, record and make note takings on the urban design theories and terminologies with reference to Cullen (1975) in his book entitled The Concise Townscape.

The trip was also an official collaboration visit to the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering, Politecnico Milano in Milan. The MSUD students had the opportunity to present their previous studio works to the students and researchers of the Urban Simulation Laboratory through the knowledge sharing session held in conjunction with the visit. While the researchers from the Urban Simulation Laboratory presented their completed and on-going projects related to urban regeneration and rejuvenation around Milan cities. UTM delegates also received an invitation to the project presentation organised by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning under the collaboration workshop called “The 3rd Wicked Problem Workshop on Architectural and Urban Sustainability” by the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering, Politecnico Milano held at the Urban Centre, Milan, Italy. The workshop involved the design and planning of regeneration proposals in selected areas within Milan, Italy. The visit ended with the possibility of further academic collaboration such as participation in the summer workshop, exchange students and research attachments.
