JOHOR BAHRU, 23 November 2016 – A total of 41 representatives from the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) attended the 27th Joint Council Meeting for Occupational Safety and Health or Mesyuarat Majlis Bersama Keselamatan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (MBKKP) for Institutions of Higher Education and Institutional Research Development (2 / 2016).
Among the attendees were representatives from both public and private universities together with local Research Development Institutes.
The meeting was held at the Banquet Hall, Sultan Ibrahim Chancellery Building for two days starting from 22 November 2016 and was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail.
Among activities carried during the course of this meeting was a safety talk given by a representative from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and also the visit to Taman Negara Johor, Tanjung Piai and the Nanas Museum, Pontian.
The MBKKP is a body set up on the basis of the sharing of knowledge to all members in management aspects of safety and health at the workplace.
The original idea of the foundation of MBKKP was sparked in a discussion among representatives of Malaysia’s public universities at the Occupational Safety and Health workshop which was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on 23 January 2003.
The MBKKP founding meeting was held on 17 April 2003 at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to discuss its main purpose of establishment, which was to assist the government in addressing the challenges of occupational safety and health in the present and future.
Among the objectives of the MBKKP is to disseminate information and effective action, creating a network of occupational safety and health among institutions of higher learning, creating awareness on OSH, taking advantage of all the institutions of higher learning on occupational safety and health and to develop OSH management planning that are planned, organized and clear.
In this meeting also, the handing over of duties as Secretariat of MBKKP was held between UTM and USM. It is a tradition among members of MBKKP to rotate among themselves in shouldering the responsibility of being the Secretariat.
