Khazanah Nasional CEO Talk at UTM KL Campus Insightful

KUALA LUMPUR , 11 December 2015 : – A public lecture entitled ‘Building True Value: Twelve Ideas Shaping Khazanah’ by Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Mokhtar, Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad was held at Dewan Utama, Menara Tun Razak, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Campus on 10th December 2015. The talk was attended by 250 participants comprising UTM top management, as well as all levels of UTM staff and students, in addition to distinguished guests from the industry and other higher learning institutions.

This program comes under the CEO @ Faculty Program (CEO@FP) mooted by the Ministry of Education, in support of the Second Shift of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) which aims to enhance Talent Excellence. CEO@FP aims at encouraging exceptional and notable CEOs from the industry to share their experiences and knowledge in steering an organisation to success. These CEOs will be on the Advisory Panels of selected universities, in addition to giving public lectures, keynote addresses, and inspirational talks. They will also be involved in co-teaching with a University Professor on a particular subject at selected host universities.

Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Mokhtar, Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional is one of the CEOs appointed under CEO@FP. He will spend a significant amount of time as a mentor to staff and students at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and other public universities nationwide, especially within the two-year appointment period.

In his talk, Tan Sri Azman stressed that the notion of ‘idea’ has been embedded into the title of his talk as he is more concerned with the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what’ and the ‘how’. The core of Khazanah’s efforts is to build true value for Malaysia, achieved through three major initiatives, namely, investment returns, strategic returns, and societal returns.

Khazanah continues to remain strong by focusing on twelve ideas which underpins the building of true value. The twelve ideas shaping Khazanah are:

  • Performance – focus, transformation and execution
  • Khazanah as Macro-Manager, and GLS as Micro-Manger
  • Sovereign Development Fund and Sovereign Wealth Fund
  • Sensible, Real and Islamic Finance
  • Cities and Economic Density
  • Collective Action, Complementary Advantage and Collaboration
  • Internationalisation and Regional Champions
  • Malaysia Inc. v 3.0 – Rebalancing the Role of States and markets
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Inclusion and Sustainability
  • Talent, Culture and a Learning Organization
  • Institutionalization Integrity and Good Governance

Tan Sri Azman said that to succeed, it is of utmost importance that we do the right things right, in the right way. ‘Doing the right things’ comes under mandate, ‘doing the things right’ comes under value creation, while ‘doing things in the right way’ comes under governance.

He also pointed out that in ensuring that an initiative is successful, we need to get the balance of three elements right. The three elements are ‘tough’ which involves giving due diligence to any undertaking, ‘savvy’ which involves being creative in coming up with solutions, and ‘fair’ which involves being honest and equitable.

During the course of his talk he mentioned that a possible future collaboration between UTM and Khazanah could involve the use of real case studies which have been amassed by Khazanah which can be used as an effective teaching and learning tool in UTM lecture rooms.

Tan Sri Azman ended his talk on a high note by expressing his hope to not only engage in future collaborations with Public Universities in Malaysia under this CEO @ Faculty Programme, but to also have a public lecture in UTM Johor Bahru Campus sometime next year.
