JOHOR BAHRU, 25 October 2015 – The Center for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), launched an Information Technology Galleria located at the UTM Johor Bahru campus.
The Galleria was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Dr. Azlan Abdul Rahman in conjunction with CICT’s Open Day 2015 .
Deputy Director of CICT, Samsudin Nyat said the Galleria aims at showing the younger generation of the early days of computer equipment used in UTM.
“Not many staff and students know about the tools that we used in the early days of information technology.
“With the Galleria, we hope to create more understanding and awareness, especially among the younger generation on the initial equipment that was used to carry out administration work on campus,” he said.
The collection on display included the Mainframe Terminal, Controller, Mainframe Data Storage, Magnetic Tape Unit, IBM Tape Control Unit, and many more.
Asked about the sources of the exhibition’s artifacts, Samsudin explained that the equipment on display are the tools belonging to CICT.
“All devices on display belong to CICT. However, many have been written off or become obsolete. We also intend to open this place to the public. We need more than this for future exhibition”.
“We also plan to contact several computer makers like IBM (International Business Machine) to seek additional exhibition artifacts,” he said.
CICT’s Open Day 2015 was organized with the aim of introducing the center and its services to the entire UTM community, which is also in line with its status as a driver of ICT based on innovative service and quality.
