JOHOR BAHRU, 21 October 2015 –
The 30-Year Celebration of UTM in Johor festival was officiated by the UTM Chancellor, Her Royal Highness (HRH) Raja Zarith Sofia Sultan Idris Shah.
The UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar said in his speech that the establishment of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia campus in Skudai, which was officially launched on 16 September 1985, has resulted in the rapid development of economic, social, education level and infrastructure in not only Skudai, but a also its surroundings.
“As the only public higher education institution in the Iskandar Development Region, there is great opportunity for UTM to strengthen strategic cooperation with the Johor state government based on knowledge and innovation.”
“To enhance the academic and research ecosystem environment, we intend to rebrand the Johor Bahru campus as the Skudai Innovation Valley. We hope this will strengthen the role of the university as an ‘innovation powerhouse,” he said.
Apart from the celebration of the 30th anniversary of UTM in Johor, Her Royal Highness Raja Zarith Sofia also launched another program at the ceremony, namely the 55th UTM Convocation Festival (Fesko) held in conjunction with the university convocation ceremony.
The UTMost Innovation Festival 2015 which is a high-impact event is also infused into Fesko. Both Fesko and UTMost Innovation Festival will last until October 26, 2015.
“With the theme ‘Fun With Techno Science’ , the innovation festival this year will provide an exciting experience for visitors to the world of engineering, science and technology.
“I hope that visitors will be able to gain numerous experience by being in the university, which not only serves as an institution of higher learning but also as a source of knowledge and at the same time recognizing our contribution to the country,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The opening ceremony held at Dataran UTM was also attended by Dato ‘ Dr. Ridzuan Haji Salleh, UTM Pro-Chancellor and Tan Sri Dato ‘ Mohd Ramli Kushairi, a member of the UTM Board of Directors.
