The award recipients are the reprint authors whose research articles were mostly referred by researchers worldwide. Their articles were extracted from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) for a period between 2005 to 2014 by indexing agencies, Thompson Reuters which is based in New York, United States.
This recognition is the result of joint ventures between Thomson Reuters and the Malaysian Citation Centre, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education in improving the status of researchers and recognising them not only at the national level but also internationally.
Indexing in international academic journals is the most significant factor in promoting the work of local researchers.
A total of 13 Malaysian journals were also selected as the recipient of the Incentive Scheme Publishing (CREAM) at the same event, as the journals had demonstrated high performance in international databases such as WoS and SCOPUS.
