JOHOR BAHRU, 2 June 2015 – With the sharp rise in dengue cases recently, four Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)  Electronic Engineering undergraduate students comprising Mr. Yong Bang Xiang, Mr. Jason Lim Ji Chen, Mr. Tan Ru Dei, Mr. Chin Linn Kern under the supervision of Dr. Yeong Che Fai has come-up with a mobile app named ‘We Alert’. The app allows users to report dengue cases quickly, and automatically alerts other users in the neighbourhood affected by the  dengue epidemic.
In a press conference held at UTM Johor Bahru recently, Dr. Yeong explained that the data of reported cases will be stored in cloud to be analyzed with the mobile app’s predictive analysis feature, which is capable of predicting the probability of dengue outbreaks in the area.
“This allows users to monitor areas with a high risk of dengue outbreaks.  Data received through the mobile app can then be used to enhance the community’s awareness on the danger they face, which could contribute towards them taking  preventive actions such as cleaning the area through ‘gotong-royong’, and becoming more vigilant of the dengue mosquito breeding grounds.The Health Ministry would also benefit as they would know specific areas of where to conduct fogging.”
“The team involved with the ‘We Alert’ innovation, has received much support from the Centre of Student Innovation, as well as UTM Faculty of Electrical Engineering,” he said.
The team hopes to commercialise the app for public usage in the near future.
