JOHOR BAHRU, 28 October 2014 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Civil Engineering students won two categories in the Highest Early Strength Concrete Cube Competition (HESCC) 2014 organized by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in collaboration with the American Concrete Institute Kuala Lumpur Chapter, Institute of Infrastructural Engineering and Sustainable Management of Malaysia (IIESM) and Concrete Society of Malaysia (CSM).
The competition was held from 19 to 20 September 2014 in conjunction with the International Construction Week (ICW 2014) at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur.
The UTM civil engineering student team won the third place in two categories, namely, the highest strength category and presentation category.
UTM Faculty of Civil Engineering Dean, Prof. Dr. Shahrin Mohammad said that winning was not the main intention of sending students to compete in this competition.
“We sent them with the purpose of giving these students experience in using their technical knowledge obtained in class to produce high strength concrete in a short time through innovative and creative techniques.”
“Through this competition, students can gain exposure to the real job as civil engineers, which would be useful for when they leave UTM to join the workforce,” said Prof. Shahrin.
Students competing in the event comprised of UTM post-graduate students, namely, Siti Norhafiza Azhar, Loh Wai Kin, Albert Tay Boon Ket, Norlaili Latife, Ong Ying Rui, Koh Wee Kiam, Nur Farhana Mohamad Basri and Nur Aqma Mohd Aseri.
