UTM Collaborates with Two Indonesian Universities in Offering International Service Learning Early Next Year

JOHOR BAHRU, 29 August – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the University of Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) together with University Negri Makassar (UNM) will be collaborating in International Service Learning next year.
The collaboration in this programme was based on the discussions held between UTM’s representatives comprising Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Baharuddin Aris, Senior Lecturer, Dr. Nor Fadila Amin@ Mohd. Amin, Shahrin Ahmad (Lecturer and Programme Coordinator), and representative from Unismuh led by Erwin Akib (Director of International Unismuh) and representatives of UNM led by Dr. Mushawir Tayib (Head of Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, UNM).

Program Coordinator, Shahrin Ahmad said that all universities involved have agreed to conduct the Service Learning activity in the month of February 2015 in Kleang Sbek Village, Cambodia.

“The purpose of this activity is  expose participating students to the community’s socio-economic, health, education,  and infrastructure needs as well as to raise awareness on the agricultural technology development,” said Shahrin.

It was also agreed that 10 student from each participating universities will be involved in this activity, with participating students   given training for two weeks at UTM, before leaving for Cambodia.

“This strategic collaboration, with the learning experience going beyond conventional learning and teaching, is new academia being put into practice,” Shahrin further added.
