UTM is one of the Asian partner universities participating in the Innovation and Design for Euro-Asian Scholar (IDEAS) Project. The project involves 5 universities from the Asian consortia (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia; Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India; Lahore University of Management, Pakistan; Royal Institute of Bhutan, Bhutan and Tribhuvan University, Nepal) and 7 universities from the European consortia (Mälardalen University, Sweden as the Main Project Coordinator; Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; University of Abertay Dundee, United Kingdom; University of Tartu, Estonia; Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain; Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain; Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Germany).

IDEAS is an Erasmus Mundus, Action 2 – Strand 1 project funded by EU Commission, with a total grant amounting close to Euro 2 million (2011-2015). It provides scholarships for Asian scholars to undergo study or research work in one of the 7 EU partner universities as mentioned above.

The project has an overall objective to create a partnership in research and education that will strengthen ties between Europe and Asia. It has a special focus on innovation and product realization in a global context.

The project will provide students and researchers excellence in scientific and technological domains, based on both theoretical foundations and practical experience with an international perspective, and prepare them to participate in building and managing complex and large systems and infrastructures.

Scholarships are offered at various levels, including undergraduates, postgraduates, postdoctoral and staff, to candidates with excellent academic and research merits.

The scholarship will cover major expenses including a return flight ticket to Europe, tuition fee, insurance and living allowances. The scholarships are mainly for students studying in UTM (Target Group 1); while other local and international students (from certain countries within Asian) studying in Malaysian higher education institutions might also apply under other target group (Group 2).

For the first intake for Target Group 1 (commencing in February 2012), priority is given to UTM students studying in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Online Application has started since 15 October 2011 for the February 2012 intake.
