JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 19 – 36 students of Advanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training from the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Technology (FEST), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has participated in an educational visit to Malaysia Construction Academy (ABM) Southern Region. There were three courses involved in this trip, Mechanical Engineering in Education, Electrical Engineering in Education, and Civil Engineering in Education. This visit was conducted by Dr. Sharifah Maryam Syed Azman and Dr. Salmalina Salleh. The purpose of this experiential learning is part of the course objective of SHPE 1033 Workshop and Safety Management. Through this experiential learning, students are exposed to the advanced facilities and training programs offered at ABM, a leading institution in the construction industry.

Experiential Learning to ABM

The visit began with an introduction to ABM from Mohammad Rafee A. Rashid, followed by a briefing on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards from Kamaruzaman Mohd Salleh. This set the stage for a series of hands-on activities designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical insights, equipping students with a deeper understanding of construction technologies and safety practices.

Among the highlights were demonstrations of gas pipe insulation techniques, the use of aluminum welding for heat reduction, and bay washing processes for enhanced structural durability. Students also observed hands-on activities such as bricklaying, plastering, and electrical works, emphasizing the importance of precision and safety. ABM staff introduced the students to the concept of Building Operation Maintenance (BOM), covering essential topics like air-conditioning systems, plumbing, tiling, and civil engineering. Workshops led by experienced trainers, showcased welding techniques and the application of multi-trap backup systems in construction, underlining their role in ensuring safety and efficiency.

One of the most engaging sessions was a demonstration in the air-conditioning training workshop, facilitated by instructors. The session provided insights into domestic air-conditioning installation, emphasizing potential hazards such as electrical risks and the importance of proper ventilation and lighting in preventing workplace accidents. Students also learned about the significance of protective measures in construction environments. They were cautioned about the dangers of not wearing protective eyewear, which could lead to injuries caused by sparks or debris. The emphasis on safety protocols reinforced the importance of adhering to industry standards.

The visit concluded with a reflection on the practical knowledge gained. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to engage with industry professionals and observe real-world applications of their coursework. Such initiatives are vital in preparing students for future careers in the construction and technology sectors.
