Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has reached another milestone in the QS World University Rankings: Asia for 2025, advancing to the 28th position. This achievement marks UTM’s highest placement in the regional rankings to date, solidifying its position as one of the leading institutions in Asia. UTM is now ranked No. 4 in Malaysia and No. 6 in ASEAN, further underscoring its prominence in the region. In this edition, 984 institutions across Asia, including 40 from Malaysia, participated in the rankings.

Over the past decade, UTM has demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory in the QS World University Rankings: Asia. Starting at the 61st position in 2015, UTM has steadily advanced, making significant leaps, particularly in recent years. The university entered the top 50 in 2018, climbed to the top 40 by 2021, and now, in 2025, proudly stands among Asia’s top 30 universities. This steady progress reflects UTM’s dedication to enhancing academic and research standards, as outlined in its strategic plans, such as the UTM Global Plan (PGU) and the ongoing enVision UTM 2025.

UTM’s success in the 2025 rankings can be attributed to its outstanding performance across several indicators, with four of them ranking among the Top 50 in Asia. The university performed exceptionally well in Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation, underscoring its high regard among global academics and employers.

The university’s commitment to internationalization is further reflected in its achievements in outbound and inbound student exchanges. UTM recorded a significant increase in its Outbound Exchange indicator, rising from a score of 29.4 to 73.7, reflecting the university’s efforts to encourage global exposure for its students. Similarly, the Inbound Exchange indicator improved from 78.9 to 90.1, driven by UTM’s internationalization policies and initiatives.

UTM’s high score in the International Research Network indicator reflects the university’s extensive collaboration with international institutions, fostering cross-border research and innovation. Guided by the UTM Research and Innovation Blueprint 2025, the university has focused on building sustainable research networks with its international counterparts. For instance, UTM has established satellite offices and laboratories in institutions in China, Indonesia, and Russia. Additionally, international research and capacity-building grants have been secured to tackle global grand challenges in collaboration with partner institutions.

As a hub for international students, UTM’s diverse campus environment—spanning its Johor Bahru, Pagoh, and Kuala Lumpur campuses—contributes to its strong performance in the International Students Ratio indicator. This metric demonstrates the university’s ability to attract talents from around the world, enhancing its multicultural environment. Over the years, UTM has observed an increase in interest from inbound international students, drawn by the university’s diverse program offerings.

Expressing pride in the achievement, UTM Vice-Chancellor , Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail highlighted the dedication and hard work of the faculty, staff, and students who contributed to this success.

“UTM’s rise to the 28th position in the QS Asia Rankings 2025 is a reflection of our commitment to academic excellence and innovation. This accomplishment demonstrates our steadfast focus on prioritizing the quality of our research, teaching, and the fostering of global partnerships, beyond the demands of ranking exercises,” he stated.

As UTM celebrates this significant milestone, the university remains committed to its mission of excellence in education, research, and innovation. The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025 achievement is a proud moment for UTM, which will continue to uphold its tagline, “Innovating Solutions,” and its motto, “In the Name of God for Mankind.”
