EcoRiz: Eco-Friendly Project to Empower Sellers in Oil Recycling

In a strategic effort to champion environmental sustainability and empower local communities, the Innovation Economics Research Group from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Faculty of Management, under the leadership of Dr. Hanini Ilyana Che Hashim, has initiated an ambitious oil recycling project as part of the Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP@Faculty). This transformative initiative, funded by KTP@Faculty, engaged 14 local vendors from Medan Selera to deepen their understanding of recycling used cooking oil and explore its environmental and economic benefits.

Launched on October 27, 2024, the project was thoughtfully designed to raise awareness among local vendors about the environmental risks of improper oil disposal, while also introducing income-generating recycling practices. Dr. Hanini highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, saying, “This program not only aims to educate vendors on sustainable waste management practices but also provides an avenue for them to generate additional income by repurposing used cooking oil.”

The program featured interactive sessions and hands-on activities, equipping participants with practical skills to collect and process used cooking oil for resale. Dr. Hanini and her team also facilitated connections with potential buyers interested in purchasing recycled oil, creating economic opportunities for the vendors to benefit both the environment and the local economy.

Structured around three key phases—awareness, action, and impact assessment—the project covered essential aspects of oil recycling. Participants were educated on the environmental hazards posed by improper oil disposal, received training in safe collection and storage methods, and learned strategies for maximizing revenue through recycling.

This project aligns with UTM’s dedication to advancing sustainable development practices while bolstering the local economy. The Faculty of Management envisions replicating and scaling similar projects in other communities, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility that is also economically rewarding. Through such initiatives, UTM continues to lead in promoting sustainable practices that have far-reaching benefits for both individuals and the planet.
