Chilling in Penang: Strolling through the lush Botanical Garden, soaking in history at Fort Cornwallis, vibing at USM, and unwinding at Padang Kota Lama.

A group of international students embarked on a memorable journey of cultural and eco-tourism in Penang as part of the Independence Day activities organized by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) International Kuala Lumpur. The program, which took place from August 9th to 11th, provided the students with an enriching experience, allowing them to explore Penang’s unique heritage and natural beauty.

The journey began early at 8 am in Kuala Lumpur, and it was a packed day. The students, along with UTM International staff, explored the historic Fort Cornwallis, strolled through the scenic Esplanade at Padang Kota Lama, and got lost in the lush beauty of the Botanical Garden. The visit to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) gave everyone a taste of campus life in Penang, and they wrapped up the night with a vibrant experience at the Batu Feringghi Night Market – enjoying food, shopping, and the lively atmosphere all rolled into one.

On the second day, the group had another thrilling day. They started with an exciting ride on the Penang Hill funicular, one of the world’s steepest, providing a unique and thrilling ascent. The panoramic views from Penang Hill were absolutely breathtaking, giving everyone the perfect start to their adventure. For lunch, they treated themselves to Penang’s iconic Nasi Kandar, a feast of flavors that left everyone craving more.

Afterwards, we immersed ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Penang’s city life. The vibrant streets provided a genuine glimpse into the local culture, from the bustling markets to the animated conversations of the locals. Our students had the opportunity to experience the essence of Penang up close. The excitement continued as we took a short 3-minute boat ride to Pulau Aman, a tranquil island located just off the coast. This hidden gem gave us a peek into traditional village life, with its charming simplicity and peaceful surroundings. We even discovered some of the best fishing spots on the island, making it a perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. Pulau Aman offered a much-needed escape from the city, allowing us to unwind and connect with nature. As the day came to an end, we savored a breathtaking sunset dinner by the Penang shore, delighting in local seafood delicacies while the vibrant colors of the sunset adorned the sky. It was the ideal way to conclude a day filled with unforgettable experiences.
