JOHOR BAHRU, 24 July 2024 – The Faculty of Management at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has initiated a community program called “Digital Citizenship.” The program aims to provide knowledge and technology to the local community. Led by Dr. Nazmona Mat Ali, the initiative is part of the UTM Knowledge Transfer Programme (Research Innovation Grant) (KTP-RIG). It reflects UTM’s commitment to offering innovative solutions to real-world problems as a university for the community. The Digital Citizenship program addresses the growing need for digital literacy in today’s interconnected society, with the recognition that responsible use of technology is crucial as it continues to advance rapidly.

This initiative is a collaborative effort with Masjid Taman Sri Pulai and the Komuniti Rukun Tetangga (KRT), which includes KRT Jalan Batai, Jalan Pakis, Jalan Rotan, Jalan Meranti, Jalan Kabong, and Jalan Ara. CelcomDigi, through its NADI (National Information Dissemination Centre), is a strategic partner in the program, playing a pivotal role in disseminating information and resources. Their involvement ensures the program’s broad reach and fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility in promoting digital citizenship.

Associate Professor Dr. Mahadi Bahari, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Management (Research, Innovation & Development) at UTM, expressed gratitude to the co-organizers and strategic partners for their invaluable support. Emphasizing the importance of continuous education in digital citizenship, Dr. Bahari stated, “In today’s digital age, it is essential for everyone to understand the implications of their online actions. This program is just the beginning of our ongoing efforts to promote digital literacy and responsible online behavior.”

The Digital Citizenship program consists of two series designed to address critical aspects of digital literacy and well-being. The first series, themed “Ethics, Health, and Digital Wellbeing,” took place on 29th June 2024 at Masjid Taman Sri Pulai. The program included a knowledge-sharing session by Cik Ummie Shakina binti Parijan, Assistant Manager at NADI Desa Mengkuang. The ‘Klik Dengan Bijak’ session was followed by a practical session led by Dr. Nazmona from the Information and Service Systems Innovation Research Group (ISSIRG). Dr. Nazmona demonstrated the proper use of digital devices, emphasizing the importance of balanced screen time, ergonomic device usage, and the impact of digital habits on physical and mental health. The first series was attended by around 50 children aged 10-12 years from the Taman Sri Pulai community.

As digital challenges continue to evolve, such initiatives are crucial in equipping the younger generation with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a connected world. The program targets children aged 10-12 from Taman Sri Pulai as a pilot project, with plans to expand to other nearby communities. The second series, focusing on Digital Literacy with Canva, is scheduled for August 3, 2024, at the Faculty of Management, UTM.
