On May 13, 2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) celebrated a remarkable victory at the Sustainable Entrepreneurial Mindset Showcase (SEMS) 11.0, held at Makerspace (S01). The event, starting at 9:00 AM, featured numerous innovative student groups presenting projects aligned with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Nine teams were selected through video submissions from all sections. The competition showcased a wide array of creative and sustainable entrepreneurial solutions. Teams from the Faculty of Computing dominated the event, clinching top honors across all categories. Notable projects included:
- NourishNow, led by Siew Yu Xuan
- ResQFood, led by Maathuree Veerabalan
- RenovApp, led by Ahmed Shukur bin Jalaludin
- Health Gamer, led by Keshiniy Mogan
Other impressive projects from the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) were:
- Kumpel Smart Mixer, led by Nur ‘Izzatie binti Abdul Karim
- Portable Kettle, led by Nor Farahiyah Ilyana binti Ismail
- Solar Powered Portable Phone Charger, led by Anis Fatinah binti Noor Azhar
Additional significant contributions from the Faculty of Computing included:
- Advanced Production Planning System, led by Muhammad Iqbal Habibie
- Wireless Light Pacing System for Runner, led by Tee Ng Zikang
The judging panel, consisting of UTM lecturers and external industry experts, evaluated the projects based on criteria such as development process, creativity, functionality, attractiveness, cost-effectiveness, commercial potential, validation, video presentation, and participants’ knowledge. The event concluded with an award ceremony on May 14, 2024, where UTM’s Faculty of Computing secured victories in all major categories:
- 1st Place: Wireless Light Pacing System for Runner

The competition was open to UHAK 1032 / UBSS 1032 sections, with teams required to present innovative prototypes addressing specific SDGs. Each team consisted of five members and one academic advisor. The projects were judged on criteria including development process, creativity, functionality, attractiveness, cost-effectiveness, commercial potential, validation, and presentation.
The impressive performance by the students and their advisors highlights UTM’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship among its students. The top two winners received monetary rewards and the opportunity to represent UTM in the upcoming Business Idea Competition in Jakarta, Indonesia. This clean sweep by UTM’s Faculty of Computing underscores the faculty’s dedication to excellence and innovation in sustainable solutions, setting a high benchmark for future competitions.
