JOHOR BAHRU, 6 June – The Arithmetic Adventure: Learning Mathematics Through Interactive Games is a mathematics learning program designed to enhance student’s understanding and achievement in arithmetic, particularly for Pure Science students. This program features a series of engaging game activities that integrate various mathematical concepts, aligned with the Mathematics Form 4 and 5 syllabuses. Its primary aim is to reinforce students’ arithmetic fundamentals in a fun and meaningful way. The objective of this program is multi-faceted, aiming to cultivate a holistic approach to mathematics education while addressing key challenges faced by students. The program supports two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education (SDG 4) and Partnership for the Goals (SDG 17). Quality education is promoted through the program’s innovative approach, empowering students with mathematical knowledge via interactive games as an alternative to traditional classroom learning.
Registration session
The dissemination of arithmetic-related mathematical knowledge was organised by 40 students from the service-learning course, Sains Komuniti (UKQF 2082, Section 10) under the School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Skudai. This program was attended by 100 Form 5 students from SMK Skudai, SMK Mutiara Rini, SMK Desa Skudai, SMK Taman Tun Aminah, and SMK Taman Universiti 2. This program was inaugurated by Mrs. Hjh. Rostena Ismail, Principal of SMK Skudai. The program, spanning five hours, featured two primary sessions: the ‘OhMyGenius’ and the ‘Victory Junction’. All activities revolved around arithmetic concepts in alignment with the secondary school curriculum delineated in the Standard Curriculum and Assessment Document (DSKP). The program emphasizes five key mathematical processes essential for effective and thoughtful learning, including problem-solving, reasoning, mathematical communication, representation, and connections. These processes are intricately interwoven and systematically integrated within the curriculum framework.

This program is carefully crafted to foster students’ ability to think creatively and critically when tackling mathematical problems. For example, activities within the program involved problem-solving tasks that require deep analysis, application of various strategies, and consideration of consequences and steps. Through fun and engaging activities, the program seeks to change students’ negative perceptions of mathematics. For example, by incorporating intriguing narratives or scenarios, students can see the relevance and applications of mathematics in their daily lives, which builds confidence in mastering these concepts.

In addition, activities that contextualize mathematics in relevant and engaging scenarios, such as exploring scientific principles, historical contexts, or everyday occurrences, serve to illustrate the practical uses of mathematics in the real world. This helps students understand the importance and applicability of mathematics in various fields. Overall, The Arithmetic Adventure aims to make learning arithmetic fun and impactful and to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics through cooperative and engaging educational activities. Congratulations to all!
