KUALA LUMPUR, June 7th – The 3rd International Conference for Environmental Sustainability and Resource Security (IC-ENSURES), organized by the Center for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security (IPASA) under the Research Institute for Sustainable Environment (RISE), concluded successfully on June 5, 2024. The event, held at the Concorde Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, was chaired by Ts. Dr. Nur Syamimi Zaidi and centered on the theme “Shaping the Future: Empowering Good Environmental, Social & Governance Practices.” The conference was officially inaugurated by YBhg. Datuk Nor Yahati Awang, Deputy Secretary General (Environmental Sustainability) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).
The aim of IC-ENSURES was to establish a robust international platform for exchanging views, sharing best practices, and disseminating knowledge among professionals and academicians focused on environmental sustainability and resource security. The event featured a diverse lineup of 13 speakers, including 2 Plenary Speakers, 2 Keynote Speakers, and 9 Honorary Speakers.
Highlights included insights from Mr. Edey Suresh of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei, Professor Ts. Dr. Shanti Faridah Salleh of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Mrs. Nurul Hasanah Ahamad of FGV Holdings Berhad, and Mr. Muhammad Ikram Amin Rafie from BURSA Malaysia. These industry and academic leaders shared remarkable stories of their journeys related to successful ESG data collection, monitoring, and strategy implementation, emphasizing the critical role of ESG in industry and its impact on future generations.
The honorary speakers also delivered engaging presentations on various topics, including Environment, Social and Governance (ESG); carbon and water footprint; life cycle analysis; pollution control technology; resource recovery; and climate change impact and adaptation. With the participation of 120 delegates, including researchers, academics, practitioners, and industry professionals, the conference facilitated rich discussions and knowledge sharing on critical environmental issues.
Post-conference activities on June 6, 2024, offered participants a choice between two technical visits to the Langat Centralized Sewage Treatment Plant and Putrajaya Wetland, or attending a half-day workshop titled “Dissecting ESG: Navigating the Alphabet Soup of Your ESG Roadmap.”
The success of IC-ENSURES 2024 has set a benchmark for future conferences, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting environmental sustainability and resource security. The event not only highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental challenges but also showcased the power of collective action and innovative thinking in shaping a sustainable future.
