A remarkable event took place at the Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru, organized by Falak Syarie class from 4th-year Geomatics Engineering students specializing in the. The event welcomed 35 enthusiastic Form 3 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Johor Bahru (SMKA JB) to explore the world of Geomatics Engineering and  engaged in a series of enlightening activities that not only introduced them to UTM but also provided valuable insights into the field of Geomatics Engineering.

The day commenced with a warm welcome and an overview of UTM and the Geomatics Engineering program. Students were immersed in discussions about the Determination of Qiblah Direction, a fundamental aspect of Falak Syarie’, and gained knowledge about sundials, an ancient yet precise timekeeping device. One of the highlights of the event was a hands-on activity where the students from SMKA JB crafted their sundials at the UTM helipad. Guided by the Geomatics Engineering students, they calculated the time using their d.i.y sundials, experiencing the intricacies of ancient time measurement methods firsthand.

As the day unfolded, the participants were exposed to practical applications of Geomatics Engineering through an explorace session. They learned how to operate advanced surveying equipment that essential tools in the field such as the total station to determine the qiblah direction accurately. Additionally, the students honed their observational skills by studying tree characteristics and learned how to use sine quadrant – a few other methods to determine qiblah direction. This hands-on experience provided a glimpse into the real-world applications of Geomatics Engineering, showcasing its significance in various industries.

The atmosphere throughout the event was one of curiosity and enthusiasm, with students actively engaging in discussions and practical activities. The collaboration between the Geomatics Engineering students and the participants from SMKA JB created a dynamic learning environment, fostering a spirit of exploration and discovery.

The Astrofalak Adventure held at UTM Johor Bahru was a resounding success, offering a unique opportunity for young minds to explore the diverse facets of Geomatics Engineering. Through interactive sessions, engaging talks, and hands-on activities, the event not only promoted academic knowledge but also inspired a passion for the field. As the participants bid farewell to a day filled with learning and adventure, they carried with them newfound insights and a deeper appreciation for the world of Geomatics Engineering.
