Seminar on River Basin Management using Drone by Geoinfo Club FABU

Prof Dr Chris Gibbins shared his experience as an ecologist in using drone and satellite images for river basin ecology restoration.

JOHOR BAHRU, 15 May 2024 – The Geoinfo Club of the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) hosted a seminar on “Use of Drone and Satellite Data to Support Sustainable River Basin Management” at Convention Hall, B12. The event, which was attended by 140 participants, including students, lecturers and committee members, aimed to explore the interface between modern technology and sustainable river ecosystem management.

The seminar was enriched by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Dr. Suzanna binti Noor Azmy, the advisor of the Geoinfo Club, and the moderator of the program, Professor Ts Gs Dr. Kasturi Devi a/p Kanniah. Their invaluable guidance and support were crucial to the successful execution of the event. Professor Ts Gs Dr. Kasturi Devi a/p Kanniah, the moderator of the program, played a crucial role in networking with the speakers and organizing the successful seminar. Her extensive experience and connections within the academic community enabled her to invite distinguished guests such as Professor Colin Gibbins from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia, to deliver the keynote address.

The highlight of the seminar was the keynote address by Professor Colin Gibbins from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia. Professor Gibbins’ presentation covered a range of topics, including the interaction between river flow hydraulics, sediments, and aquatic biota, the impact of changes in flow and thermal habitat on river ecosystems, and the development of ecologically acceptable flow regimes. His extensive research and practical applications provided participants with a deeper understanding of how modern technology can help in the conservation and management of river ecosystems.

The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session where attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with Professor Gibbins. The questions reflected the keen interest of the audience and the relevance of the topics discussed. The event concluded with a special ceremony where Professor Gibbins was presented with a souvenir as a token of appreciation, followed by a group photo to commemorate the successful seminar.
