Future-Ready Malaysia: Invaluable Collaborations in Artificial Intelligence Education

On November 2, 2023, the Future Tech Innovation Research (FTIR) hosted a pivotal gathering to discuss the AI Governance System and the institutionalization of the Malaysian National AI Policy and Strategy. The meeting, led by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Project Leader, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aini Suzana Arifin, was attended by representatives from various national institutions including Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Standard & Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM), AG, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and UTM AI Experts, Dr. Syahid and Dr. Azizul.

The event underscored the commitment of Malaysia’s leading experts in shaping the nation’s artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. The discussions focused on the development of a robust AI framework that ensures responsible and ethical AI implementation.  The attendees explored the complexities of AI governance, discussing the challenges and opportunities associated with AI technologies. They emphasized the importance of a comprehensive AI policy and strategy that would guide Malaysia’s AI endeavors while prioritizing ethical considerations.  The meeting also highlighted the need for the National AI Policy and Strategy to be a dynamic entity that evolves over time, guiding Malaysia towards an AI-powered future.

The discussions were grounded in the realities of the present, informed by past lessons, and inspired by future possibilities. The attendees acknowledged the challenges and uncertainties of the journey towards an AI-powered future, but also recognized that with collaboration, dedication, and a clear vision, these challenges can be overcome.  The meeting concluded with all attendees expressing their commitment to continue working towards making Malaysia a future-ready nation. They are ready to face the challenges head-on and steer Malaysia towards an AI-powered future.
