JOHOR BAHRU, 31st July – Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and Geomatic Innovation Research Group (GnG), Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FBES), UTM conducted a workshop on Advanced Positioning Augmentation Data Processing and Application via Satellite Communication from 31st July 2023 to 4th August 2023. This workshop aims to explore the development of high-precision navigation in Malaysia with the support of a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) and to strengthen the research collaboration between MYSA and UTM. The MYSA team was led by Mr Ooi Wei Han, a senior researcher from Space Engineering & Technology Division, MYSA.
The workshop covered two (2) theoretical modules. The first theoretical module covered the introduction to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) with a focus on SBAS and was conducted by Associate Professor Dr Tajul Ariffin Musa and Dr Wan Anom Wan Aris from Geomatic Innovation Research Group (GnG), FBES. Meanwhile, the second module covered the GNSS signal, structure and positioning using communication satellite and was conducted by Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Zuri Sha’ameri from Digital Signal Processing Research Group (DSP), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTM.
The workshop also included a data collection trip from UTM JB to Kuantan via two different routes, UTMJB-KL-Kuantan and Kuantan-Mersing-UTMJB. Two different positioning augmentation techniques were used, and the GNSS data was collected for further analysis.
A follow-up workshop was held at MYSA on 18th August 2023 to discuss this research’s result and the way forward. This workshop strengthens the research synergy between MYSA and UTM, specifically on GNSS for high-precision navigation via SBAS.
