Postgraduate students at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) are gearing up for the Research Carnival Month 2023 with newly acquired public speaking skills, thanks to a successful Public Speaking Workshop. The event, held on April 9, 2023 (Sunday), was organized by the School of Graduate Studies (SPS) and the Postgraduate Student Society, University Teknologi Malaysia (PGSS UTM).
The workshop, led by ToastMasters Club UTM President, Dr. Nor Ain Husein, and facilitated by ToastMasters Club UTM members, Ms. Sofiazianti Saleh and Ms. Syaza Soraya Sauli, was conducted in conjunction with Research Carnival Month 2023 (RCM 2023), aimed to equip postgraduate students with essential public speaking skills.
Following assistance in writing their public speaking scripts, the participants gave an informative presentation on “Introduction to Public Speaking” by Dr. Nor Ain Husein. With vivid narrations and slides highlighting her experience as the 3MT National Champion, Dr. Nor Ain shared her journey.
Ms. Sofiazianti Saleh then presented Tips on Delivering a Winning Presentation, captivating the audience with her emotional delivery. The workshop concluded with a Practice and Hands-on session, allowing participants to deliver speeches and receive constructive feedback.
The workshop aimed to support the participants of the Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT) and Graduate Research Exhibition Competition (GREx) competitions during the Research Carnival Month and improve postgraduate students’ public speaking skills in various environments. The event proved highly insightful, and Dr. Nor Ain emphasized the importance of effectively communicating research to a broader audience.
