A Global Learning Experience in Malaysia for 25 Korean Students

The Summer School (SS), A Global Learning Experience in Malaysia (AGLEIM), at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) resumed in full force after a 2-year break due to the pandemic. The SS AGLEIM, which started in 2015, has seen active participation annually. For 2023, 25 participants from the Kookmin University (KMU), Seoul, spent time with 10 UTM Buddies from the 5th to 18th of February. Despite the final examination weeks, the Buddies and the KMU students participated in the activities that the SS committee members had planned. For the SS 2023, Dr Ummikalsom took over managing the SS from Prof Dr Normah, who had started the AGLEIM programme. Dr Mohd Faizal Hasan, Dr Mohd Fairus Mohd Yasin, Dr Wong Ken Yin, Dr Muhammad Faiz Hilmi Rani, and Dr Desmond Daniel Chin Vui Sheng assisted fully in the whole SS programme with Prof Normah being the Advisor.

Activities completed during the two weeks included visits to the FME laboratories, lab exercises, and talks by academics from the FME (Assoc. Prof Dr Tuty Asma and Dr Wong Ken Yin) as well as from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (Assoc. Prof Dr Mohd Ridzuan Ahmad) and Faculty of Civil Engineering (Assoc. Prof Dr Tan Cher Siang). The participants were also taken to visit a pineapple farm and the Majlis Bandaraya Johor Baru, certified as a Green Building.

Three KMU professors took turns to be in UTM to oversee the activities implemented; Prof. Dr Ahn Joon (Vice Dean of the KMU University-Industry cooperation), Prof. Dr John Hong (Advanced Materials Engineering), and Prof. Dr Kim Hyun Ki (Civil and Environmental Engineering). On February 10th, the participants went for an overnight trip to Kuala Lumpur with a stop in the historical state of Melaka. The programme closed with an Explorace where students had to solve riddles, looking for clues where the fastest group was the winner.
