Three delegates from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) participated in the Virtual Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2022 from 27 to 31 March 2022. This year’s conference and exhibition were organized by British Columbia Council for International Education (BCCIE), in collaboration with Simon Fraser University, Canada as the primary host.

With the theme “Brave New Realities for Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific,” the 5-day virtual conference and exhibition have brought together passionate professionals in international education from across the globe to the Asia-Pacific region to network, improve professional skills and learn about new developments in international education. Around 1300 registered delegates and 90 exhibitors were involved in this program.

Professor Dr Nordin Yahaya, from the Faculty of Engineering at UTM, who was also the Director of Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and previous Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) of UTM, delivered a very informative presentation titled “International Collaboration for Higher Education – Regional Harmonization in Southeast Asia”. Mr Syed Raihan-Ul-Islam, Sr. Asst. Director of International Affairs, Daffodil International University (DIU), Bangladesh, who was the second speaker, has shared his presentation on ‘Understanding SDGs to Implement: Students during Pandemic. The forum was moderated by Professor Dr Nor Haniza Sarmin, Associate Director (Global Strategy & Engagement) of UTM International. Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Ismid Mohd Said, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), also participated in the conference.

UTM was the lead host for the APAIE Conference & Exhibition 2019, held in Kuala Lumpur from 25 to 29 March 2019. The programme that was graced by the Permaisuri Johor, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah, was attended by more than 2000 international delegates from 60 countries and ambassadors from 15 countries, who came to share about new developments in international education and internationalization in Asia-Pacific higher education institutions.

The APAIE Conference and Exhibition 2022 has increased UTM’s global prominence and visibility for collegial collaborations with new and existing partners worldwide. UTM’s aspiration to achieve international eminence as a distinguished Malaysian research university has been evident by its participation in this 5-day virtual conference and exhibition.
