NEW INSIGHTS AND STRATEGIES ON INTERNATIONALISATION AGENDA IN HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS

AKEPT in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) had successfully hosted the first series of the Management of Internationalisation for University Leaders course (MIUL) via Adobe Connect platform on 29th and 30th March 2021. 20 selected participants from public and private universities who are currently leading the International Affairs Office or managing International matters in their institutions had actively participated in the course.

Four main topics were discussed in the course – Leadership in Managing Internationalisation in HLI, Strategic Relation or Strategy for Internationalisation, Leading Higher Education Branding and Marketing, and Student’s and Academic Exchanges: Way Forward. Monitored by the speakers, the breakout-room discussion sessions among the participants had generated an intense sharing of ideas as leaders in managing the international matters for higher learning institutions based on the given tasks and questionable issues.

The course aimed to provide training and give exposure to the leaders of the International Office, especially to those who are newly appointed in managing internationalisation at their institutions. Thus, the course would focus on the Malaysia international agenda; providing knowledge to assist the leaders of the respective office to enhance and strengthen the position of higher education institutions they lead globally; and to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas related to best practices in the management of the International Office among participants.

Among the 20 universities selected to participate in this program were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, University Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, University Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Universiti Sains Malaysia. During the program, participants were encouraged to exchange ideas for the best practices of International Office management in Higher Education Institution.

Our utmost gratitude goes to all three practitioners of Internationalization of Higher Education, Professor Dr. Nordin bin Yahaya (Director of Higher Education Leadership Academy, AKEPT), Datuk Parmjit Singh (CEO of Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation, APU), and Professor Dr. Yong Zulina Zubairi (Assistant Vice-Chancellor International, University of Malaya).

UTM is indeed grateful to all parties involved in making sure MIUL (1st Series) is a success, especially to AKEPT for the trust given to UTM to spearhead the implementation of the course this year. We would also like to congratulate the first-round participants who had given their valuable time and commitment attending the 2-day programme, the secretariats and the committees from the Centre for Leadership Sustainability of AKEPT, UTM International and UTM Digital. We hope that the participants have gained new insights and strategies to enhance their skills in promoting the internationalization agenda of their institutions. So, stay tuned for the 2nd series of MIUL!
