One team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was declared the 2nd Runner Up at TAR UC E-Data Hackathon 2020 on 25th October 2020.

TAR UC E-Data Hackathon 2020 was organised by TAR UC CoE of BDA and AI, and Computer Science Society. It was open for students from Premier Tech Digital Universities(PDTI) which included TARUC, UTM, Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi MARA, Taylor’s University, Sunway University, Multimedia University(MMU), Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU),  HELP University, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The hackathon required participants to collect their data and design and develop an AI tool kit that can help local business or industry. Participants needed to design their prototype and solution based on 3 problem statements given by the industries.

One day before the hackathon kickoff, all participants were trained by professors from TAR UC on the application of data science software tools like Tableau and Rapidminer. On the day, the hackathon began with an official kickoff where participants were given only 24 hours to design and develop their prototype.

The UTM team – Team ADX, consisted of Oscar Ling Fang Jack and Jason Quah Chen Meng from Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, and Lee Sze Yuan from Bachelor of Computer Science (Data Engineering), Faculty of Engineering, and Associate Professor Dr.Yeong Che Fai as the mentor.

The team managed to build a prototype, in under 24 hours.

They designed ADX – an advertisement design evaluator. It uses AI to determine the effectiveness of ad visual designs & perform sentiment analysis to determine if customers like the design. This prototype aims to save the business owner’s cost & time in developing effective ad posters for their digital marketing campaign.

In the final pitching session, this hackathon had witnessed 36 teams of students from PDTI members. All teams were fighting for the top positions. Fortunately, Our UTM team was able to secure 3rd place under the data science track with their prototype.
